| Art Lovers pay tribute to Bengal Masters:
The Art Elements Gallery recently held a preview or “Art from Bengal”, a show displaying paintings, drawings and sculptures of 24 Bengali artists. The exhibition, comprising 60 distinct pieces of art, was a mix of contemporary and post-progressive artistry, with roots in different parts of Bengal, Rajya Sabha MPDr Karan Singh inaugurated the exhibition, while Dr Mahamed Higazy, the ambassador of Egypt of India, Shallu Jindal, well-known Kuchipudi dancer and social activist, were the guests of honour, Shamshad Husain, also graced the occasion with his presence.
The preview showcased the works of acclaimed artists like Prokash Karmarkar, Dhiraj Choudhary, Suhas Roy, Jogen Choudhary, Niren Sen Gupta, Shuvaprassana as well as Dipali Bhattacharya. Apart from these artists, there were many paintings by emerging painters most of whom live and work in Santiniketan.
Dr Higazy found the exhibition a conglomeration of historic civilizations and the renaissance period. He said, “Since Egyptian and Indian civilizations were the oldest cultures in the world. I find many similarities in their art forms. I like this exhibition because it also reminds me of the age of renaissance.”
Though the artists were happy to showcase their art, not all of them agreed with the theme. “Art can never be compartmentalized on the basis of state or a particular region. Though the exhibition is called ‘Art from Bengal’ I think it would be more apt to call it ‘Artists from Bengal,’” opined Naren Das Gupta, who showcased two of his works at the exhibition. |
